Scenic Railroads in Iowa
Routes, seasons, tickets, and trip tips — everything in one place.
Iowa has 4 operating scenic and heritage railroads, spread across some of the state's most photogenic terrain. Ride types include steam & diesel, funicular/incline, and narrow gauge steam, so you can tailor the experience to your interests whether you prefer a genteel parlor-car excursion, an open-air mountain climb, or an afternoon of pure steam nostalgia.
The standout ride in Iowa is the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad (Iowa Railroad Historical Society), based in Boone. A steam & diesel excursion, it takes passengers a trip through the Des Moines River valley to the old coal town of Fraser, crossing the tall Bass Point Creek and Des Moines River bridges. The journey lasts approximately 1.8 hours. It operates Seasonal; Memorial Day weekend through October 31 (2026 season starts May 23). Tickets are $5-$15.
Fall is the premier season for rail touring in Iowa. 2 of the 4 lines run foliage specials or highlight autumn color in their marketing — and for good reason. Leaf-peeping excursion seats on steam trains routinely sell out weeks or even months ahead; if fall is your target window, treat ticket purchases as part of your route planning, not an afterthought. Summer (June through August) is the second-busiest window, with the widest schedule availability and the most family-friendly atmosphere.
